

Most golfers do not have a training system.
They have a collection of exercises.
They save a mobility drill from Instagram.
They copy a medicine-ball throw from a Tour player.
They add a squat because somebody said golfers need stronger legs.
Then they throw in a cable rotation because it vaguely resembles the golf swing.
Put everything together, sweat for an hour, and call it golf training.
There is only one problem:
A collection of exercises is not automatically a training program.
A real program needs a goal.
It needs organization.
It needs a reason for selecting each exercise.
And it needs a progression.
That is why we developed the five S.M.A.R.T. Principles at Golf MATchanics:
Strength.
Motor.
Applied Mechanics.
Rhythm.
Training.
These principles help us answer a much more important question than:
“What exercise should I do?”
They help us ask:
What are we actually trying to change?
THE GOLFER MYTH
The S.A.V.E.D. Workout
There is something I see all the time when golfers find out what I do.
I call it:
The S.A.V.E.D. Workout.
S.A.V.E.D. stands for:
Social-Media Advice Via Exercises and Drills
It happens when your collection of saved exercises slowly becomes your training program.
A golfer pulls out his phone and starts showing me the Holy Grail he discovered on Instagram.
“This stretch is for my hips.”
“This drill is going to fix my backswing.”
“Scottie Scheffler does this one.”
“Bryson DeChambeau does that one.”
Therefore:
This must be exactly what I need.
Not necessarily.
And before I sound like the old guy yelling at social media, I am
going to admit something:
I have my own saved workout folder.
I save exercises.
I watch other professionals.
I see creative setups.
I find different ways of using machines.
Sometimes I see an exercise and simply think:
“That looks fun. I want to try that.”
Sometimes I try it and think:
“That was actually pretty good.”
Other times I finish one repetition and think:
“There is absolutely no reason I ever need to do that again.”
So I get it.
The difference is that I use those exercises as ideas.
Before I put something into a program, I want to know:
What is the goal?
What physical quality is this exercise trying to improve?
Why would this particular golfer need it?
Can I change the resistance, position, range of motion, or equipment and accomplish the same thing another way?
Sometimes I never use the original exercise.
I take the idea behind it, break it apart, and build something that better fits the golfer standing in front of me.
That is the difference.
The problem is not that you saved the exercise.
The problem is when your Saved folder becomes your program.
THE FITNESS JUNK DRAWER
Without an actual goal, golfers start building what I call a fitness junk drawer.
You have:
Mobility drills
Resistance-band exercises
Cable rotations
Medicine-ball throws
Hip stretches
Core exercises
Balance drills
A couple of exercises some Tour player posted three years ago
Then you walk into the gym, open the junk drawer, and pick whatever looks good that day.
No assessment.
No order.
No progression.
You can absolutely get tired doing this.
You can sweat.
You can get sore.
You may walk out of the gym feeling pretty damn good about yourself.
Then you go play golf and think:
“Crap. Nothing changed.”
That is because fatigue and progress are not the same thing.
Think about your workout like a meal.
I like jelly beans.
I like steak.
I like sushi.
And I like chicken Alfredo.
All good things.
I am still not throwing all four into a giant pot and calling it dinner.
That would be a crime against food.
Exercises are ingredients.
Your program is the recipe.
Your goal determines the meal you are trying to make.
The S.M.A.R.T. Principles help us organize that recipe.
S — THE STRENGTH PRINCIPLE
Strength is the first principle because everything we do at Golf MATchanics eventually comes back to building strength.
We are a strength company.
That does not mean we only care about how much weight you can squat, bench press, or deadlift.
Strength is much bigger than that.
It is your body's ability to:
Produce force.
Absorb force.
Control force.
Recruit muscles.
Stabilize positions.
Control transitions.
Manage changes of direction.

But the main idea is simple:
Strength is the physical foundation everything else builds from.
You can give your body the perfect golf cue.
You can show it exactly where you want it to go.
But if your body does not have enough strength to stabilize the position, control the motion, or tolerate the force, it still has to find another way.
One side starts working harder.
You borrow motion from somewhere else.
You start feeling tight.
Your back begins tightening late in the round.
Your legs stop supporting you.
Your swing changes because your body can no longer maintain what it was doing earlier in the day.
Then golfers shrug and say:
“I’m getting older.”
“My back is always tight.”
“I always fall apart on the back nine.”
Maybe.
But those can also be signs that part of the system does not have enough capacity for the demand.

Now we take that strength and teach the body how to use it.
That is Motor.
This is where a lot of the movements golfers actually want begin to show up.
How do I shift?
How do I use the ground?
How do I rotate my pelvis?
How do I separate?
How do I control the transition?
Those are motor questions.
The Motor Principle is about getting muscles and joints to work together in a coordinated and repeatable pattern.
But there is an important catch:
Your body needs the strength to handle a movement before it can reliably learn that movement.
This takes us right back to the S.A.V.E.D. Workout.
The golfer in the Instagram video may have enough strength and control to perform that drill.
You may not be starting from the same place.
That does not make the drill bad.
Your body may simply not be ready for it yet.
This matters especially for golfers over 40.
One of the most common things I hear is:
“I want to get better, but I do not want to hurt myself.”
Good.
Then we need to figure out what you currently cannot control before repeatedly forcing your body through it.
Because beating your head against a wall does not make the wall any softer.
If the body cannot control the movement, something else often starts taking the stress.
That is why Motor Strength sits later in the FlexSmart Roadmap.
Build the pieces first.
Then teach the pieces to work together.
Strength gives you the pieces.
Motor teaches them how to work together.
A — THE APPLIED MECHANICS PRINCIPLE
Applied Mechanics is where science starts shaping the exercise itself.
We look at things such as:
Force direction.
Joint position.
Leverage.
Moment arms.
Range of motion.
Movement speed.
Sequencing.
Change one variable and you may completely change the exercise.
Consider a rotational medicine-ball throw.
It certainly looks golf-specific.
The golfer rotates.
The ball flies.
It hits the wall.
Big loud noise.
Everybody in the gym turns around.
Great.
But what did we actually train?
Where was the force directed?
When was speed created?
Was the golfer using the hips and trunk?
Or were the arms simply flying over the top?
Was the ball light enough to move at the intended velocity?
If the golfer creates all the speed too late, the exercise may look athletic without matching the goal.
The same idea applies to squats.
A front squat, back squat, and hex-bar squat are all squats.
But they do not create identical leverage, positions, or muscular demands.
The question is not:
“Which squat is best?”
The question is:
“Which version best matches what we are trying to accomplish with this golfer?”
That is also why we do not need to perform a curtsy lunge just because somebody says:
“This really hits the glutes.”
Maybe it does.
But if the golfer cannot control the hip, knee, or foot in that position, there may be another way to develop the same strength.
The goal is not to win an award for creating the coolest exercise on Instagram.
The goal is to create the intended adaptation.

R — THE RHYTHM PRINCIPLE
Rhythm determines how the exercise is performed.
It has three major pieces:
Sequencing
What moves first?
Tempo
How quickly does the movement unfold?
Intention
What are you trying to accomplish with the repetition?
I like to say:
Rhythm is the dance.
Put ten people in a room and ask all of them to perform a squat.
You may see ten different squats.
One initiates through the hips.
Another immediately bends through the knees.
Another lifts through the back.
One controls the entire descent.
Another drops into the bottom and bounces right back out.
Technically, everybody performed a squat.
But they did not perform the same repetition.
Suppose the goal is to build control in a deeper squat position.
You reach the bottom.
Great.
But did you actually own the position?
Or did you drop, bounce, and hope for the best?
The same question applies to a medicine-ball throw.
Are you rehearsing the sequence?
Are you trying to accelerate?
Are you controlling the deceleration?
Or are you simply moving as fast as possible without knowing
what should happen first?
Without rhythm, explosive movement can become:
Chaos performed at a higher speed.
Strength holds the position.
Motor organizes the movement.
Applied Mechanics matches the exercise to the goal.

T — THE TRAINING PRINCIPLE
Training is where everything finally comes together.
Strength creates capacity.

This is the fun part.
This is where we actually get to work.
But even hard work needs organization.
You cannot walk into the gym, pick six exercises, perform three sets of ten, and assume you created the correct training program.
We still have to ask:
Where are you starting?
What are you trying to accomplish?
How many days can you realistically train?
What needs the most attention?
How much stress can your body tolerate?

You should feel stronger.
More capable.
More prepared.
And eventually, some of that improvement should cross over into your golf game.
Training is where real change is made.
HOW THE FIVE S.M.A.R.T. PRINCIPLES WORK TOGETHER
Go back to our rotational medicine-ball throw.
Instead of simply saying:
“Medicine-ball throws are good for golfers,”
run it through the S.M.A.R.T. system.
Strength:
Can you create, absorb, and control the force?
Motor:
Can your hips, trunk, shoulders, and arms work together instead of moving like one giant block?
Applied Mechanics:
Is the ball the correct weight? Is the force moving in the right direction? Does the setup match the goal?
Rhythm:
What is the intended sequence, speed, and purpose?

How many repetitions? How many sets? How much rest?

Now the exercise has context.
Now it has a purpose.
Otherwise, you are just throwing a ball at a wall.
It may look athletic.
It may be loud.
