What Is a Pendulum Golfer?
When I think about a pendulum golfer,
I picture that little drinking bird toy.
You know the one.
The bird head dips down toward the water, comes back up, then drops back down again. The whole thing rocks forward and backward as one connected system.
That is the picture.
The entire system moves together.
There is not much separation.
In the golf swing, that means the pelvis, lower torso, upper torso, shoulders, and arms are not creating enough independent movement. Instead of the body separating, sequencing, and reconnecting, the golfer moves more like one big block.
Everything goes back together.
Everything comes through together.
That is the pendulum golfer.
Now, this does not mean the golfer cannot play.
A pendulum golfer can still shoot good scores.
A pendulum golfer can still be competitive.
But the question is not simply, “Can you play this way?”
The better question is:
How much is your body compensating to make this swing work?
Because over time, compensation has a cost.
The “Hands Are the Key” Belief
Here is where a lot of golfers get stuck.
They start believing that the hands are the key.
And honestly, it makes sense why they believe this.
Many golfers hear it constantly in lessons.
Get the hands back.
Get the clubface back.
Get the hands back to square.
As long as the hands get back, the shot has a chance.
The hands matter.
The clubface matters.
Impact matters.
Nobody is saying those things are unimportant.
But the mistake happens when golfers build their entire swing around the belief that if they can just get their hands back, they are playing good golf.
Then the hands become the default system.
The hands become the fix.
The hands become the bailout plan.
And for some golfers, that can work pretty well.
They may have great hand-eye coordination.
They may be athletic.
They may be competitive.
They may be really good at saving the shot with their hands.
Some hand-dominant golfers can play very good golf.
But here is the bigger question:
Are your hands creating the shot because your body is helping you, or are your hands saving the shot because your body cannot?
That is the difference.
When the body cannot separate, rotate, or organize motion well, golf can quickly turn into an arm-and-hand game.
And this is not always the golf pro’s fault.
A golf pro is often put in a tough position.
A golfer shows up and says, “Fix my swing.”
But that golfer may not be able to separate the pelvis from the torso.
They may not be able to rotate well.
They may not be able to control their hips.
They may not be able to use the ground effectively.
So the pro has to get the ball moving better with the body that showed up that day.
It is like taking your car to a mechanic and blaming the mechanic because the engine is bad, the transmission is slipping, the tires are worn down, and the alignment is off.
The mechanic can try to make the car run better, but at some point, the car has mechanical issues that need to be addressed.
That is how I look at golf instruction when the body cannot move well.
Sometimes the golf pro is trying to coach a swing inside a body that does not have enough movement options.
So what becomes the easiest thing to coach?
The hands.
Square the clubface.
Time it better.
Save the shot.
That can help in the short term. But over time, the golfer may start believing good golf is only about getting the hands back.
That is where the pendulum golfer gets trapped.
Because if the upper torso, lower torso, pelvis, hips, and shoulders are not separating well, the hands may have to do too much.
Now the swing becomes a race.
Can the hands get back before the body gets in the way?
Can the arms save the shot before the pelvis stalls?
Can timing cover up the fact that the body is moving like one big unit?
That may work for a while.
But as you get older, timing gets harder.
Recovery gets slower.
The back gets tighter.
The hips get stiffer.
The shoulders and elbows start taking more stress.
Eventually, the hands are trying to save a body that is giving them fewer and fewer options.
That is not a great long-term plan.
The Two Types of Pendulum Golfers

The type one pendulum golfer is the classic arm-and-shoulder driven player.
This is what many people would call old man golf.
During the takeaway, this golfer is not really moving well through the ribs or torso.
The club goes back mostly because the arms and shoulders take it back.
The body follows.
The legs are there, but they are not driving much.
The feet are not really helping create force into the ground.
The lower body is not setting up the motion.
The torso is not separating well.
The key idea is this:
The arms control the motion, and the body reacts to the arms.
This golfer may still be effective.
They may hit the ball 180 or 200 yards.
They may keep it straight.
They may know how to play their game.
Inside 125 yards, they may be deadly.
This golfer can absolutely shoot good scores.
But the limitation is usually distance.
And as the body gets tired, the arms can only save so much.
That is when the golfer may start seeing more topped shots, weaker contact, shoulder irritation, elbow issues, neck tightness, or that feeling like there is just nothing behind the ball.

Type Two: The Athletic Pendulum Golfer
The type two pendulum golfer is different.
This golfer may look athletic.
They may have speed.
They may have power.
They may use the ground well.
They may have played sports.
They may even be a single-digit handicap.
From the outside, it may look like they have great separation.
But when you look closer, they may not truly own pelvis and torso separation.
They may create the appearance of separation through hip motion, knee motion, shoulder blade motion, speed, or momentum.
It looks like rotation.
It looks like separation.
But the upper and lower torso may not be independently controlled.
This is where technology can sometimes get tricky.
A golfer can be hooked up to a motion system and show decent numbers.
The screen may show pelvis motion and thoracic motion.
The coach may say, “Your numbers look pretty good.”
But if you ask that same golfer to isolate the pelvis from the torso without using the hips, knees, shoulders, or shoulder blades to fake it, they may not be able to do it.
That is the problem.
They may have motion in the golf swing, but they do not truly own the isolated control.
And when you do not own the control, you may have to borrow motion from speed, heat, momentum, or compensation.
Why Some Pendulum Golfers Play Better on Hot Days

When it is hot outside, their body feels loose.

The body has more available motion.

Then they go inside the clubhouse.

They sit down for a little bit.
Their body cools off.
And suddenly, their back tightens up like crazy.
Some golfers know this so well that they avoid going inside during a round.
They do not want to cool down because they know it will be hard to get moving again.
That is a big clue.
If your separation only shows up when your body is hot, loose, and warmed up, you may not truly own that separation.
You may be borrowing motion from temperature, momentum, and looseness.
Once the body cools down, the nervous system may start protecting again.
The muscles tighten.
The low back locks up.
The hips feel stuck.
Now the golfer is trying to swing through a body that no longer feels available.

Another reason is that many of us were never taught how to separate.
We learned sports by doing them.

Throw a ball.
Swim. Run.
Lift.
Play.
We cared about the result, not necessarily how the pelvis, rib cage, hips, spine, shoulders, and arms were organizing the movement.
So we learned how to get the job done, but we may not have learned how to separate and sequence the body efficiently.
Another major reason is training in one plane.
Traditional strength training often lives in straight lines.
Bench press.
Rows.
Squats.
Deadlifts.
Curls.
Leg press.
There is nothing wrong with getting stronger.
Strength matters.
But straight-line strength does not automatically create rotational control.
Golf is rotational.
Golf requires separation.
Golf requires the body to organize force, not just produce force.
This was part of my own issue.
When I was younger, I trained more like a bodybuilder.
I built strength in straight lines,
then expected my body to rotate and separate just because I picked up a golf club.
That is not how it works.
Injuries, surgeries, and body complications can also play a major role.
Back injuries, hip issues, shoulder problems, abdominal surgeries, heart surgery, prostate surgery, or trauma through the torso and pelvis can all change how the body feels, moves, contracts, and protects itself.
The body adapts.
Sometimes it adapts by moving less.
Sometimes it adapts by bracing.
Sometimes it adapts by making the shoulders, arms, or low back do more than they should.
That does not mean the body is broken.
It means the body found a strategy.
But if that strategy becomes the main way you swing a golf club, it may eventually cost you.
Common Problems Pendulum Golfers Deal With

Shoulder irritation.
Elbow issues.
Neck tightness.

Can your pelvis move?
Can your thoracic spine move?
Can your upper and lower torso separate?
Can you rotate without faking it through your shoulders, knees, hips, or low back?
Can your muscles contract well enough to support the motion?
Can you control the range you are trying to use?
This is where isolated work can become powerful.
When you do a wood chop, can you feel the shoulders moving on the rib cage?
When you do torso rotation, can you feel the ribs move without the shoulders or pelvis taking over?
When you work on pelvis motion, can you feel the pelvis move underneath the ribs?
This is not just about making a muscle stronger.
It is about teaching your system how to feel, control, and separate pieces that may have been moving together for years.

Former baseball pitcher.

And when we assessed him, he had trouble separating his lower torso.
We worked for about a month on better muscle control through his pelvis and lower torso. He felt better, then went on a golf trip to Florida.
The first nine holes were great.
Then things fell apart.
He could not clear his hips.
His back was killing him.
By the third day, he had to stop.
When he came back in, his body was still moving pretty well.
The work we had done was still there.
So I asked him to set up like he was hitting a golf shot.
He went through his pre-shot routine, and I noticed a little low-back arch.
Before we worked together, his pelvis was more tucked under, so that arch probably helped him find a more neutral setup.
But after the work we had done, his pelvis had started moving into a better position. Now that same old setup move was over-arching and jamming his low back before he even started the swing and he didnt need to do that anymore.
Once we adjusted the setup and got him to stop arching his lower back his pelvis cleared better and his back felt find.
That is the lesson.
When the body changes, the swing may need to reorganize.
This is why body work and golf coaching should work together.
If you improve separation, control, and range, you may need new drills and cues to connect those body changes back into your golf swing.
One of my clients said it best:
“I want to learn how to move my body to create my shots instead of having my hands control my shots.”
That is the whole point.
If all you are doing is trying to get your hands back to square, you may get better at timing your hands.
But that does not mean your body is creating the shot.

Body Change Can Change the Swing
One client story explains this well.
A newer client came in who was a type two pendulum golfer.
Former baseball pitcher.
Very good golfer.
Single-digit handicap.
His shots were erratic.
He felt arm-y in his swing.
His hips felt tight.
And when we assessed him, he had trouble separating his lower torso.
We worked for about a month on better muscle control through his pelvis and lower torso. He felt better, then went on a golf trip to Florida.
The first nine holes were great.
Then things fell apart.
He could not clear his hips.
His back was killing him.
By the third day, he had to stop.
When he came back in, his body was still moving pretty well.
The work we had done was still there.
So I asked him to set up like he was hitting a golf shot.
He went through his pre-shot routine, and I noticed a little low-back arch.
Before we worked together, his pelvis was more tucked under, so that arch probably helped him find a more neutral setup.
But after the work we had done, his pelvis had started moving into a better position. Now that same old setup move was over-arching and jamming his low back before he even started the swing and he didnt need to do that anymore.
Once we adjusted the setup and got him to stop arching his lower back his pelvis cleared better and his back felt find.
That is the lesson.
When the body changes, the swing may need to reorganize.
This is why body work and golf coaching should work together.
If you improve separation, control, and range, you may need new drills and cues to connect those body changes back into your golf swing.
One of my clients said it best:
“I want to learn how to move my body to create my shots instead of having my hands control my shots.”
That is the whole point.
If all you are doing is trying to get your hands back to square, you may get better at timing your hands.
But that does not mean your body is creating the shot.
The goal is to improve body function and body control so the body can help create the motion instead of the hands constantly trying to save what the body cannot do.
