Why Golfers Start Breaking Down in August

The beginning of August can be a turning point for golfers—
especially those of us playing in the Midwest.

You have already spent three or four months swinging, practicing, walking courses, sitting in golf carts, playing league nights, traveling, and squeezing in weekend rounds whenever possible.

Maybe you did not train enough during the offseason and fell into the Couch-to-Course Problem. You did very little all winter and then immediately started playing multiple rounds a week once the weather improved.

Maybe you trained throughout the winter but stopped once the golf season began because you assumed playing golf would be enough to keep your body strong.

Either way, August eventually shows up.

Your hips feel tighter.
Your back feels icky.
Your shoulders do not move as freely.
Your knees start talking to you.
It takes longer to loosen up before a round and longer to recover afterward.

The problem is that the golf season is not over.

Golfers around Glenview and Chicago’s North Shore may still have August, September, October, and sometimes even part of November left. Occasionally, the weather gives us a few playable days in December.

​Your body should not be falling apart by Labor Day when there could still be months of golf available.

The Golfer Myth: “I Can Just Force More Range”

When golfers start feeling tight, the common response is:

“I need to force more range.”

This is not about a quick, comfortable stretch.

It is the deep, aggressive stretching—the bouncing, forcing, pulling, and holding because you are trying to make the discomfort disappear or force your body back into a position that felt easier in May.

Your golf swing is being affected, so more stretching must be better.

Right?

Not necessarily.

You are essentially telling your body:

Give me the position I need, or stop hurting.

But what if the problem is not simply that you lost range?

What if you lost some of the muscular strength and control required to support that range?

Your golf swing may still reach the same general positions, but your muscles may no longer be doing as much of the work needed to get you there or control what happens when you arrive.

​That is what I call the Midseason Range Leak.

What Is the Midseason Range Leak?

The Midseason Range Leak is the compound effect of fatigue, lost strength, and the repeated one-sided demands of golf. Together, those demands begin shrinking the range your muscles can actively create and control.

The Midseason Range Leak has two parts:

1) Owned range
2) Borrowed range

Owned Range
Your owned range is the movement your muscles can actively create and control without momentum or another part of your body forcing the position.

You do not merely reach the position.

Your muscular system can:

• Produce the movement
• Create force inside the position
• Support the joint
• Maintain the position without unnecessary compensation
• Move back out of the position under control

Borrowed Range

Your borrowed range is the additional movement you receive from:

• Acceleration
• Momentum
• Gravity
• An outside force
• Compensation elsewhere in the body

Golf needs borrowed range.  This the 

The golf swing is fast, athletic, and integrated. As you move deeper into your takeaway and transition toward the target, the motion of one body segment helps carry the next segment into position.

Your pelvis turns. Your trunk continues. Your arms keep moving. The club accelerates.

Those forces may carry your body farther than it could move during a slow, isolated assessment.

Borrowed range is not automatically the problem.

The leak begins when your owned range starts shrinking, but you continue asking your swing to travel through the same amount of borrowed range.

Your backswing may still look long, but now you lift or sway to complete the turn.

Your follow-through may still look complete, but your lower back does more because your hip cannot control enough rotation.

Your shoulder may still reach the finish, but your shoulder blade, elbow, or spine has to help because the shoulder itself cannot support the position.

The golf ball still has to be hit, so your body finds another way.

You are not necessarily losing visible swing range.

​You are losing muscular ownership underneath that range

Why More Stretching Is Not the Complete Answer

Stretching is not automatically bad. There is a time and place for it.

The mistake is assuming that deeper passive range automatically creates more usable mobility.

Imagine holding a doorframe, turning your body, and forcing your arm farther across your chest.

You reached a deeper position because an outside force helped you.

But what happens when you let go?
Can your muscles actively return your arm to the same position?
Can you control it without shrugging, twisting, leaning, or borrowing movement from somewhere else?

If not, you gained access to more range—but you did not necessarily gain ownership of it.

Research indexed on PubMed suggests that short bouts of static stretching generally have little effect on muscular strength. Longer or more aggressive stretching, however, may temporarily reduce force production in certain situations.

That does not mean every stretch shuts a muscle off.

It means you can create more passive range without simultaneously creating more muscular control.

How Isometrics Help Plug the Leak

An isometric contraction happens when a muscle creates tension while the joint remains relatively still.

You are producing a static force, you are not flying through the position with momentum.

You are stopping inside the range and asking:

Can my muscles create force here?

That question changes the purpose of your mobility work.
You are no longer asking only how far you can force your body to move.

You are asking how far you can move while maintaining muscular contraction and control.

The Brain and Muscles Are on the Same Team
This is where the feedback loop between the brain, nervous system, and muscles becomes important.
Your brain and muscles are not working on opposite teams.

The brain sends the command. The nervous system carries that message. The muscle attempts to produce tension, and information about the position and quality of the contraction travels back to the brain.

Together, the system is answering three questions:

Where am I?
Can I create force here?
Can I control this position?

Better communication between the brain, nervous system, and muscles can help create more active mobility while reducing the need to shrug, sway, twist, or borrow motion from another part of the body.

An isometric contraction does not magically create mobility.

​It gives the brain and muscles an opportunity to practice producing force together inside a specific position.

Why You Lose Control in the shortened position first?
 
Think about performing a biceps curl.

At the beginning of the set, you can bring the weight all the way to the top.

As you fatigue, the curl becomes shorter. Your elbow begins drifting, your shoulder moves forward, and your body leans back to help.

You may still get the weight up, but you no longer own the top of the movement in the same way.

The same process can happen during golf season.

You may still complete your backswing, but now you need more sway, lift, or spinal motion to reach the top.

The swing still reaches the position.
Your body simply reaches it differently.

​Performation a strategic isometric contraction allows you to stop before compensation takes over, create force in that position, and begin rebuilding what you are losing.

The thought process behind this reset comes from what I learned through Muscle Activation Techniques™.

MAT taught me to examine range of motion, identify where muscular contraction begins breaking down, apply an isometric contraction, and then retest the motion.

I did not create that underlying process.

I renamed and organized it into an acronym to make it easier for golfers to remember and apply during the season.

I call it the:
F.O.R.C.E. Isometric Reset

​F.O.R.C.E. stands for:

• F — Find the Leak
• O — Own the Position
• R — Resist the Motion
• C — Creep Deeper
• E — Evaluate the Change

This is not about producing maximum force.

​It is a simple method for identifying a Midseason Range Leak and beginning to rebuild control.

F — Find the Leak

Choose one motion that feels tighter or harder to control than it did earlier in the season.
Do not test your entire body at once. 
You are looking of assymetries between right and left side.

You might notice that:

You cannot turn as well toward your trail side vs your lead side.
One hip does not rotate as well as the other
Bringing your lead arm across your chest feels restricted compared to your trail side.

This is how you pick your Leak.

The example we will using is bringing your arm across your chest.

start by bring one arm across your chest as far as possible without using your opposite hand.

Notice where the movement stops.

Also notice how you reach the position.

Do you shrug your shoulder?
Do you twist your chest?
Do you lean your body?

​That is your starting Leak.

O — Own the Position

Bring the arm across your chest again, but stop before you begin shrugging, twisting, leaning, or forcing the motion.

This is the deepest position you can currently control cleanly.

That is your owned position.

It may not be as far as you want to move. That is okay.

You are not trying to prove how flexible you are.

You are identifying the final position where your muscles can still perform their intended job.

Use this rule:

If you lose the contraction or need to compensate, you went too far.

​Back out slightly until the position feels controlled.

R — Resist the Motion

Place your opposite hand against the working arm.
You can also use a stable doorframe if it safely opposes the direction you are trying to move.

Attempt to move the working arm farther across your chest while the opposite hand prevents it from moving.

The joint stays relatively still, but the muscles responsible for bringing the arm across your body begin creating tension.

Start gently, using approximately 20 to 30 percent of your available effort.

Gradually build the contraction and hold it for five to ten seconds.

Continue breathing.

Do not shrug, twist, or turn the movement into a wrestling match.

The goal is to feel a clear, controlled contraction in the direction you are trying to improve.

This is the feedback loop in action.
Your brain asks for force. Your muscles respond. Your nervous system reports how well you controlled the position.

You are telling your body:

​This is where I am.
This is the direction I need force.
These are the muscles I want involved.

C — Creep Deeper

After each isometric contraction,
relax
reset.

Move the arm across your chest again and determine whether the range improved.

If it did, find the new position where you can still create a clear contraction.

Do not jump six inches farther or immediately force the deepest available position.

Move only slightly deeper and repeat the isometric contraction.

Build the tension.
Hold it.
Relax.
Reset and test again.

This is where golfers commonly get the order wrong.

You are not forcing the range first and hoping the muscles eventually figure out how to control it.

You are building the contraction first and allowing better range to follow.

You are progressing because you earned muscular control farther into the motion.

That is how borrowed range begins becoming owned range.

​Repeat the process for three to five isometric contractions—or until the range stops improving cleanly.

E — Evaluate the Change

Let go of the arm and repeat your original test on both sides.

Bring the arm across your chest without using the opposite hand.

Ask:
Did it move more freely?
Can I reach farther without shrugging, twisting, or leaning?
Can I feel the muscles actively producing the movement?
Can I control the new end position?

The goal is not simply to finish farther across your chest.

The goal is to finish farther while maintaining muscular control.

If you can only reach farther by compensating, you did not truly plug the leak.
You found another way to borrow the motion.

The two  goals is to have symmetrical range and force between left and right side

Ask whether each side can control its own available end range.
If both sides are limited, perform a few controlled sets on both.

How to Use the F.O.R.C.E. Reset

Keep the process simple.

Choose one or two limited motions, preferably from the same joint system.

For example, you might pair:
Spinal rotation with spinal side-bending
Hip internal rotation with hip flexion rotation

Avoid randomly combining unrelated motions, such as spinal rotation and knee flexion, during the same reset.

Hold each contraction for approximately five to ten seconds at a controlled effort.
Perform three to five isometric contractions in each motion.

Then retest.

This does not need to become a 45-minute workout.

It can be a five-minute range reset:

On an off-day
After sitting for a long period
Before beginning your complete golf warm-up

When a familiar movement begins feeling restricted

The goal is not to exhaust the muscle.

The goal is to improve the quality of the contraction and rebuild control inside the range your golf swing needs.

Stop if you experience sharp pain, joint pinching, numbness, or symptoms traveling down an arm or leg.
This is not about forcing an injured or painful joint to submit.

​It is about finding a position where you can create safe, controlled muscular tension

A Real Golf Example: Client's Lead Shoulder

I use this same thought process with all my clients.

This client popped into my head when writing this blog.

This client is a left-handed golfer, which makes his right shoulder his lead shoulder.
That shoulder has been reconstructed, and he does not have unlimited rotational range.

We are not trying to stretch the hell out of his shoulder and force it to look like somebody else’s shoulder.
We identify the range he currently has.

We find where he can still create a clear muscular contraction.

Then we use positional isometrics to build more force and control inside that range.
As his shoulder becomes more comfortable producing force in those positions, his golf swing has a better physical option available.

The isometric contraction does not magically fix his swing.

But his golf swing cannot confidently use a shoulder position that his muscles cannot support.

That is why isolated control matters:

​The more isolated control your body has, the more options your integrated golf swing has available.

Three Takeaways

1. More range does not automatically mean better mobility.
Usable mobility requires muscular ownership, not just passive access to a position.

The problem begins when your swing travels farther than your muscles can confidently support and control.

Why Golfers Start Breaking Down in August

The beginning of August can be a turning point for golfers—
